The great charter called in latyn Magna Carta : with diuers olde statutes whose titles appere in the next leafe newly corrected ... London: Thomas Petyt, 1542. Beale S13; STC 9276
Distinguished by its elaborate title page, this edition was printed by Thomas Petit (c. 1494-1565/6). It is notable as the third and last edition printed in English in the 16th century. Petit's printer's mark is seen at the base of the title page on a shield supported by two putti, or cupid-like figures.
Little is known about Petit. He published a Tyndale Bible with Robert Redman for Thomas Berthelet in 1540. He may also have been imprisoned with six other printers during 1543 for printing unlawful books loyal to the Catholic cause. Copies of fifty-nine books printed by or for Petit are still in existence, including several law books.(1)
The Law Library acquired this volume in 1933.
