The Pulling Collection
Between 1912 and 1942, Arthur C. Pulling, the Law Library's first director, created one of the most significant legal research collections in the country at the University of Minnesota, adding over 85,000 volumes to the Library during his tenure. The acquisition of historical law books was integral to Pulling’s vision of developing a nationally recognized legal research collection, and he pursued the goal with focus and zeal. With good reason, the rare books collection is today known as the Arthur C. Pulling Rare Books Collection, one of the strongest rare law collections in North America.
In addition to developing exceptional collections of historical American and English law, dating back almost to the birth of printing, Pulling acquired a wide range of foreign and international law, including treatises, laws, and law reports. He also pursued important works in American Indian law, which is still an important strength among the Center’s collections.
We continue to add books to the Pulling Rare Books Collection and to expand the Center’s significant archives and other material. These latter include the extraordinary Clarence Darrow Collection, which is also highlighted in this exhibit. As the Riesenfeld Center’s collections grow, so does their historical richness.
