Stephen Breyer, 1994-2022
Born in San Francisco in 1938, Stephen Breyer was raised by a lawyer and an active member of the San Francisco Democratic Party and League of Women Voters. He chose to attend Stanford University rather than Harvard and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1959. Following graduation, Breyer attended Oxford University on a Marshall Scholarship where he studied philosophy, politics, and economics. He went to Harvard Law School and graduated magna cum laude in 1964. Breyer was a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, a professor of law at Harvard, and an assistant special prosecutor in the Watergate investigation before President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in 1980. President Bill Clinton considered him for the Supreme Court in 1993 though Breyer had just broken some ribs and punctured a lung in a bike accident. The following year, when Justice Henry Blackmun retired, President Clinton reconsidered and nominated him for the Court. He was confirmed by the Senate, 87-9
